21-11-2024 (BERLIN) Germany has drafted an extensive contingency plan for potentially supporting up to 800,000 NATO troops, including American forces, in a scenario involving escalated conflict with Russia, according to newly revealed documents.
The comprehensive 1,000-page “Operation Deutschland” blueprint outlines preparations for what analysts suggest could be a worst-case military scenario. The classified documents, first reported by Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, detail provisions for protecting critical infrastructure and coordinating the movement of up to 200,000 military vehicles across German territory.
The planning comes amid heightened tensions following Moscow’s revision of its nuclear doctrine. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Tuesday that Russia may now respond to conventional weapons attacks with nuclear arms, marking a significant shift in military policy.
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock responded defiantly to Putin’s announcement, stating, “We will not be intimidated.” She referenced Germany’s previous “mistake” of yielding to Russian pressure during the 2014 Crimea annexation, emphasising the importance of heeding Eastern European allies’ warnings.
The German initiative mirrors similar preparedness measures across Europe, with Sweden and Norway recently distributing civil defence guidance to their citizens. The plans include recommendations for enhanced self-sufficiency, including the installation of alternative power sources such as diesel generators and wind turbines.
The escalation in European defence preparations coincides with reports of Russia seeking military support from North Korea, potentially involving thousands of troops. This development, coupled with America’s recent decision to permit Ukraine to deploy long-range missiles into Russian territory, has heightened concerns about potential conflict expansion.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed optimism about conflict resolution through diplomatic means, particularly following recent U.S. political developments. However, he emphasised that continued military support remains crucial for Ukraine’s survival.
The German defence strategy represents part of a broader European response to evolving security challenges, as NATO allies grapple with the prospect of an expanded conflict. The detailed planning underscores growing concerns about regional stability and the potential for wider military engagement.
Military analysts note that while such preparations are prudent, they also signal a significant shift in European defence posturing and recognition of heightened security risks in the region.
