20-9-2023 (JAKARTA) Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi confirmed on September 19 that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is set to visit Indonesia. While the exact date of the visit has not been finalized, preparations are underway, according to Minister Marsudi.
The groundwork for the meeting between the two leaders has already commenced, with plans for a full-format meeting between the foreign ministers of Indonesia and Germany scheduled to take place in Germany in November 2023.
Minister Marsudi stated, “We are still discussing the exact date of the visit,” as per an official transcript from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jakarta.
Previously, President Joko Widodo, commonly known as Jokowi, met with Chancellor Scholz during his attendance at the Hannover Messe 2023 exhibition in Germany last April. During this visit, Jokowi engaged in bilateral discussions with Scholz, focusing on investment, economic cooperation, and the acceleration of negotiations for the Indonesia-European Union trade pact (IEU-CEPA).
The two leaders also explored the implementation of funding for the Fair Energy Transition Cooperation (JETP), a climate change and energy transition funding partnership involving G7 countries such as the US, Japan, Germany, the UK, France, Italy, and Canada, along with Norway and Denmark. The initiative aims to mobilize an initial $10 billion to support Indonesia’s energy sector decarbonization.
Scholz’s previous visit to Indonesia occurred in November 2022 when he participated in the G20 Summit held in Bali.
