8-7-2024 (PARIS) Prime Minister Gabriel Attal announced on Sunday that he will tender his resignation to President Emmanuel Macron on Monday morning. This decision comes in the wake of the left-wing New Popular Front coalition’s unexpected strong performance in the second round of parliamentary elections, leaving no single party with an outright majority.
Attal, addressing the nation, stated, “I will hand my resignation to the President tomorrow morning. However, I am prepared to carry out my functions for as long as required.” His remarks hint at the potential for a prolonged period of uncertainty as the political forces in France grapple with the newly formed power dynamics.
The Prime Minister’s offer to resign is a customary step in such situations, allowing the President to either accept the resignation or request that the Prime Minister remains in office while negotiations unfold to establish a governing coalition or explore alternative options.
Attal’s comments came shortly after projections from pollsters suggested that the left-wing New Popular Front coalition had secured the most seats in the second round of voting, outperforming even the far-right National Rally (RN) party. However, their victory fell short of an absolute majority in the National Assembly, setting the stage for intense negotiations and potential political maneuvering.
The Prime Minister acknowledged the extraordinary circumstances, particularly given the upcoming Paris Olympics, which are scheduled to commence in just three weeks. “If my resignation is refused, I am ready to remain in office as long as duty demands,” Attal stated, emphasizing his commitment to ensuring stability and continuity during this critical period.
