16-1-2025 (YANGON) The Chinese Ministry of Public Security has reported significant success in its campaign against cross-border cyber fraud operations, with criminal enterprises in Myanmar’s Kokang region experiencing unprecedented workforce shortages following intensive law enforcement efforts.
In a statement released Thursday, ministry officials detailed how their aggressive crackdown, launched in July 2023, has effectively dismantled the notorious ‘Four Families’ criminal syndicate that previously dominated fraudulent operations in northern Myanmar. Intelligence reports indicate that surviving criminal elements have been forced to relocate to more remote areas, including Myawaddy, Wanhai, and Dangyang.
“The combined impact of robust enforcement actions and public awareness campaigns has severely disrupted these criminal networks,” said a senior ministry spokesperson. “We’re now witnessing something unprecedented – fraud compounds struggling to maintain their workforce.”
The ministry has announced plans to expand its anti-fraud initiative, pledging to conduct comprehensive investigations into cases of missing Chinese nationals potentially trapped abroad by criminal organisations. Officials are actively pursuing international police cooperation to facilitate rescue operations for victims of these schemes.
Law enforcement authorities have identified a common pattern in recruitment tactics, warning the public about fraudulent job advertisements offering seemingly attractive packages. “These criminal groups typically lure victims with promises of high salaries, complimentary accommodation, and travel reimbursements,” the spokesperson explained.
