29-6-2023 (PARIS) In response to the riots sparked by the killing of a 17-year-old teenager by a police officer, France has initiated a massive police force mobilization of 40,000 officers across the country, with 5,000 deployed in Paris. This move comes as the police officer involved in the incident was formally placed under investigation for voluntary homicide.
The French Interior Ministry made the announcement today as violent protests continued for a second consecutive night in Paris. Rioters set cars and public buildings ablaze, outraged over the fatal police shooting of teenager Nahel during a routine traffic stop.
Overnight, authorities arrested 150 individuals, prompting French President Emmanuel Macron to condemn the violence as “unjustifiable.” The unrest primarily concentrated in Nanterre, a working-class town located in the western outskirts of Paris. The incident, captured on video, has deeply shaken the nation and exacerbated longstanding tensions between local communities and authorities in disadvantaged neighborhoods throughout France.

The clashes initially erupted on Tuesday night in and around Nanterre, leading the government to deploy 2,000 police officers to restore law and order.
Mr. Macron stated, “The last few hours have been marked by scenes of violence against police stations but also schools and town halls, and thus institutions of the Republic. These scenes are wholly unjustifiable.”
The mobilization of such a significant police force across France reflects the government’s determination to contain the riots and restore peace amidst a challenging situation.
