2-4-2024 (BEIJING) In the early hours of March 31, Nanchang, the capital city of Jiangxi province in China, experienced strong winds, thunderstorms, and heavy rainfall. This severe convective weather event resulted in the tragic deaths of four individuals and left over ten others injured. Particularly distressing was an incident where three people from a residential building were blown downstairs to their deaths while they were asleep.
According to local media outlet, Mr. Xu, a resident of the Weimeng Qingshui Bay complex in Nanchang, described the terrifying ordeal. At around 3 a.m., strong winds blew away the windows in both the living room and the bedroom. Unfortunately, Mr. Xu’s 64-year-old mother and 11-year-old son, who were sleeping at the time, were blown downstairs and tragically lost their lives. Mr. Xu stated that he and his wife were sleeping with their young daughter in the master bedroom, while his father slept alone, and his mother shared a room with their older son. Upon hearing a loud noise, Mr. Xu woke up and immediately checked on the safety of his family, only to find his mother and son missing from their room. The windows in that room had been completely blown away, leaving only a bed frame with no mattress. Mr. Xu managed to remain calm and quickly instructed his father, wife, and daughter to seek shelter in the bathroom. He then dialed the emergency hotline before venturing downstairs to assess the situation.
Reports also mentioned Mr. Wan, who lived on the 11th floor and narrowly escaped the tragedy as he was sleeping in a separate room from his partner who, unfortunately, lost her life. The property management staff of the residential complex stated that several windows in the building were shattered during the incident. Preliminary investigations by the police revealed that the three individuals fell accidentally from an upper floor, resulting in their fatal injuries. The community is currently addressing post-disaster safety hazards and conducting thorough inspections. Officials from the Changnan New City Police Station, which oversees the area, stated that they are awaiting an official report.
