26-5-2023 (Tokyo) Four deaths have been confirmed following an incident involving a man armed with a hunting rifle in Japan’s central prefecture of Nagano on Thursday. The male suspect, who was later identified as the son of the local assembly speaker, was taken into custody by the police on Friday morning on suspicion of murder.
The tragedy unfolded at around 4:25 p.m. local time (0725 GMT) on Thursday when police received an emergency call about the man stabbing a woman in the city of Nakano. Local police officers who rushed to the scene were shot, and later, three deaths were confirmed.
Following the incident, the suspect fled the scene and holed up in the local assembly speaker’s residence, where multiple gunshots were heard during the night, according to local media reports.
On Friday morning, local police confirmed the death of an elderly woman at the scene. Although she was reported to have sustained injuries, her condition was uncertain as she was in proximity to the scene and could not be evacuated on Thursday.
