2911-2023 (SEOUL) In a significant development for K-pop sensation BTS, the remaining four members of the globally acclaimed group are scheduled to embark on their mandatory military service in mid-December. This comes as three of their fellow members are already serving their respective terms, as reported by South Korea’s Yonhap news agency, citing sources within the music industry.
BTS, a seven-member powerhouse in the K-pop industry, is presently on a temporary hiatus to fulfill South Korea’s compulsory military service requirements. The country maintains one of the largest active armies globally, primarily as a defensive measure against North Korea. All able-bodied men aged between 18 and 28 are obligated to serve for a period ranging from 18 to 21 months.
The decision to enroll in military service has sparked public debate, with discussions revolving around whether BTS members should be eligible for exemptions given their substantial contributions to the immensely profitable K-pop industry.
According to Yonhap’s report, the group’s leader and main rapper RM, along with vocalist V, will commence their military service on December 11. Subsequently, Jimin and Jung Kook are set to follow suit on the succeeding day. Following initial training, the quartet is expected to serve as active-duty army soldiers for a duration of 18 months, as reported by entertainment media outlet Star News.
While BTS’ management agency, HYBE, confirmed that the four members had initiated the enlistment process, they refrained from providing further comments. In a blog post earlier this month, Jung Kook had personally announced his decision to serve in the military in December.
Jin, the group’s eldest member at 30, is anticipated to complete his military service and be discharged in June.
