1-7-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) A former US Navy SEAL, who was arrested in Malaysia for carrying unloaded gun magazines in his luggage, has been released on bail pending further investigation. The Selangor police chief, Comm Datuk Hussein Omar Khan, confirmed the man’s release and stated that he would not be allowed to leave the country while the investigations are ongoing.
The detainee, identified as Ryan Bates, a US citizen and Navy veteran, was apprehended at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) while attempting to return home to Henderson, Nevada. His wife, Dianna, expressed her concern after losing contact with her husband since he was escorted away at KLIA on Thursday evening.
Ryan Bates, 43, is the father of two young children, and his detainment has caused distress for his family. Dianna took to social media, specifically Instagram, to seek assistance from the US Embassy in Malaysia. She pleaded for help, emphasizing the urgent need for support in her husband’s situation.
Reports indicate that Ryan Bates was in Malaysia to work on a documentary series called “The World’s Toughest Forces,” in collaboration with Netflix. Bates himself shared details of his initial detention through a series of videos on social media platforms. In these videos, he explained that he was being detained due to the military gear found in his possession. Malaysian officials were seen examining his luggage and discussing the presence of gun magazines.
In one of the videos, Bates expressed his frustration, stating, “They’re trying to figure out why I have all of this stuff. It sucks.” He provided updates on the situation, mentioning that officials were considering their next steps and reviewing the magazines. His last video indicated that he would be taken to a police station for further processing.
With his release on bail, Ryan Bates will await the outcome of the ongoing investigation. The incident highlights the strict regulations surrounding firearms and related equipment in Malaysia, which led to the detainment of the former US Navy SEAL.
