5-8-2023 (MANILA) As tensions continue to simmer in the West Philippine Sea, Senate Majority Leader Joel Villanueva has expressed his support for former President Rodrigo Duterte to assume the role of special envoy to China. This follows a suggestion made by Senator Alan Peter Cayetano.
Villanueva, during an online briefing with reporters, emphasized the importance of maintaining open lines of communication with Beijing. He stated, “I think he could be that person, the right person to ease the tension in the West Philippine Sea, but more so to ensure the communication lines remain open.”
While acknowledging the need for diplomacy and avoiding impulsive actions, Villanueva also highlighted the importance of safeguarding the country’s territory. He stated, “Because at the end of the day, we should not act impulsively, but at the same time, we would not allow ourselves to be stepped on and be hit in our territory.”
Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri also expressed support for Cayetano’s proposal. Cayetano, who previously served as Secretary of Foreign Affairs under the Duterte administration, suggested Duterte as a potential special envoy to China.
In July, Duterte held a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, as confirmed by Hua Chunying, the spokesperson of the Chinese foreign ministry. However, no further details about the meeting were provided.
Despite the maritime tensions arising from China’s expansive claims in the South China Sea, which overlap with the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone, Duterte has maintained cordial relations with China. This has been a subject of debate and criticism within the country.
