24-7-2023 (BIRMINGHAM) Former England forward Trevor Francis has passed away at the age of 69 after suffering a heart attack, according to a statement released by his family on Monday. Francis began his playing career at Birmingham City in 1970 before moving on to several other clubs, including Nottingham Forest, Manchester City, and Sheffield Wednesday.
In 1979, Francis became Britain’s first million-pound player when he moved from Birmingham to Nottingham Forest. He scored the winning goal in the European Cup final against Malmo, cementing his status as a legendary footballer.
The statement from his family read, “Trevor Francis has died at the age of 69. He had a heart attack at his apartment in Spain this morning. On behalf of the family, this has come as a huge shock to everybody. We are all very upset. He was a legendary footballer but he was also an extremely nice person.”
Francis also managed Queens Park Rangers, Sheffield Wednesday, Birmingham, and Crystal Palace. Nottingham Forest, the Premier League club where Francis had his most successful playing career, expressed their condolences in a statement: “Nottingham Forest is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of two-time European Cup winner, Trevor Francis. A true Forest legend who will never be forgotten.”
