1-1-2024 (BANGKOK) Many Thai laborers who fled fighting in Israel earlier this year have opted to return for financial reasons, despite the conflict raging on with Palestinian militants.
Israel has long relied on Thai workers for agriculture and construction jobs under bilateral labor programs. But rocket attacks in October prompted a Thai government evacuation of nearly 10,000 nationals back home.
Those who stayed cited handsome salaries impossible to match in Thailand. Several returnees, however, found themselves jobless and struggling to service debts. Within weeks, many made the difficult choice to resume work in Israel.
“In Thailand, I can barely save any money. In Israel I can pay off loans and support my family,” said 37-year-old Satid Prom-u-narot. He decided relocation deals weren’t enough to replace his Israel income.
Others said they earn up to 90,000 baht monthly through overtime in Israel versus Thailand’s daily minimum wage. Their skills are prized by Israeli farms. Contracts guarantee years of vital work.
But new scams have emerged trying to exploit demand. One worker warned social media ads luring newcomers with dubious Israeli jobs are fake. Legitimate hiring runs through provincial employment centers only.
While some returnees hope for future calls back, positions are getting filled by other nationalities now. But Israel’s appeal persists for Thais able to safely access these jobs again.
The conflict has faded from headlines, but endures for those experiencing its turmoil first-hand. Despite risks, Thailand’s economic woes continue driving laborers back into uncertainty, the lure of paychecks outweighing war’s disruptions.
