8-6-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) The bodies discovered floating in a lake on Wednesday (June 7) have been identified as a father and his daughter, according to Malaysian authorities.
Reports from local news outlets confirm that the deceased individuals are a 72-year-old man and his 30-year-old daughter, who had a mental disability.
Police have revealed that based on eyewitness accounts, the man had attempted to save his daughter but tragically drowned in the process.
“Witnesses tried to assist the father in getting out of the water, but their calls were ignored, and he continued swimming towards the middle of the lake until he himself drowned,” said Sentul police chief Asst Comm Ahmad Sukarno Mohd Zahari, as reported by The Star.
It remains unclear whether the woman fell into the water first or if she had intentionally gone for a swim. Investigations are currently underway to determine the cause of her death.
The incident occurred at the Kepong Metropolitan Park, a picturesque area known for kite-flying and water-based activities that is popular among locals.
However, a report by China Press on June 7 has suggested that the man may have entered the water with the intention of ending both their lives.
According to the report, witnesses observed the man and his daughter removing their slippers before entering the water hand-in-hand, with the man allegedly pulling his daughter in with him.
Authorities discovered the woman’s body approximately 20 meters from the shore at 11:07 am following an extensive search. The man’s body was subsequently recovered about an hour later, at 12:20 pm.
