6-9-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) A foreigner believed to be part of a notorious African robbery gang met a violent end during a police raid in Puchong Jaya, Selangor. The incident, which occurred late last night, has shed light on the ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks operating in Malaysia.
Bukit Aman’s Criminal Investigation Department Director, Shuhaily Mohd Zain, provided details of the operation that unfolded at approximately 10:50 pm. Police forces stormed a ninth-floor unit in Menara KLH, Puchong Jaya, with the intention of apprehending a suspect linked to a series of robberies.
The operation quickly escalated when the lone occupant of the flat refused to surrender. “The suspect was uncooperative and opened fire on our officers, discharging two shots from a revolver,” Shuhaily explained to reporters at the scene. “This aggressive action left our team with no choice but to return fire.”
The exchange of gunfire resulted in the death of the suspect, whose nationality and age are yet to be confirmed by authorities. This fatality marks another chapter in the ongoing saga of the African robbery gang that has been plaguing the region.
A search of the premises yielded a cache of incriminating evidence. “We discovered two machetes, a falsified licence plate, and a bag containing counterfeit currency,” Shuhaily revealed. Perhaps most troublingly, the suspect was found in possession of what appears to be a counterfeit United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) card, raising questions about the potential exploitation of refugee status by criminal elements.
This incident is not isolated but part of a larger crackdown on the African robbery gang. Shuhaily drew connections to recent law enforcement actions, stating, “On August 20th, another member of this gang was fatally shot by police on Jalan PJS 9/1 in Subang Jaya.” He further noted that just five days later, on August 25th, three additional gang members were apprehended while attempting to rob a Japanese national at a Kuala Lumpur shopping centre.
The series of events highlights the persistent threat posed by organised crime in the region and the challenges faced by law enforcement in combating such groups. The use of forged documents, including the UNHCR card, suggests a sophisticated level of operation that extends beyond mere street-level crime.
Authorities are now intensifying their efforts to track down the remaining members of the gang. The recent successes in apprehending or neutralising several key figures have likely dealt a significant blow to the organisation, but police remain vigilant.
