6-1-2025 (JAKARTA) In a sombre press briefing at Fleet Command Headquarters on Monday, Indonesian Navy Command (Pangkoarmada RI) Commander Vice Admiral Denih Hendrata revealed details of a fatal shooting involving naval personnel at a motorway service station last week.
The incident, which occurred on 2 January at approximately 8:00 PM at the KM 45 Rest Area along the Merak-Tangerang motorway, resulted in one fatality and one injury. Three Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) servicemen stationed at the Pondok Dayung Base in North Jakarta’s Tanjung Priok were reportedly caught in an altercation with approximately 15 civilians.
The three personnel involved were identified only by their ranks and initials: two Sergeant First Class officers (Sertu AA and Sertu RH) and one Chief Seaman (KLK BA).
According to Vice Admiral Hendrata, the confrontation stemmed from a disputed car purchase transaction. During the ensuing clash, one of the naval personnel discharged his firearm, resulting in the death of one civilian and injuries to another.
“Intelligence reports indicate our personnel were confronted by a group of approximately 15 individuals at the rest area,” Hendrata told journalists. “The situation escalated from what began as a disagreement over a vehicle purchase.”
The three servicemen are currently being held at the Navy Military Police Centre (Puspomal) pending a full investigation. Concurrent investigations are being conducted by the Banten Police, who have recently initiated case proceedings.
