23-1-2025 (NAGANO) One person has died and two others sustained injuries in a seemingly random knife attack outside a major railway station in central Japan yesterday evening, authorities report.
The incident unfolded at approximately 8:00 pm local time near a bus terminal adjacent to JR Nagano Station, when an unidentified assailant launched an unprovoked assault on three individuals waiting at a bus stop.
According to police sources, a 49-year-old man succumbed to his injuries following the attack. A man in his thirties suffered severe wounds and remains in critical condition, whilst a woman, also in her thirties, was also injured in the incident.
Witnesses described scenes of chaos as the attacker fled the vicinity, prompting a large-scale manhunt across the city. Law enforcement officials have deployed additional officers to patrol the area and have urged the public to remain vigilant.
The bustling transport hub, situated in Nagano Prefecture’s capital city roughly 225 kilometres west of Tokyo, serves as a gateway to numerous ski resorts and winter sports facilities that attract both domestic and international tourists.
