20-12-2023 (SINGAPORE) In a recent advisory on Tuesday (Dec 19), the police disclosed that victims of fake buyer phishing scams on popular online platforms Carousell and Facebook have collectively lost at least S$314,000 (US$236,000) in the current month. The authorities also revealed that a significant number of 132 individuals have fallen victim to these scams since the beginning of December.
The modus operandi of this scam variant involves criminals assuming the identity of “buyers” and initiating contact with potential victims through private messages on Carousell and Facebook. Under the guise of expressing genuine interest in purchasing items listed for sale on these platforms, the scammers lure unsuspecting sellers into their trap.
Once the victims agree to the sale, they receive a seemingly innocent link or QR code via email, in-app messaging, or even on WhatsApp. The scammers present this as a means to complete the payment for the item or to arrange courier services, such as Lalamove, for the delivery process.
However, the unsuspecting victims soon discover the true nature of the scam when they click on the provided links or scan the QR codes. Instead of being directed to a legitimate website, they are redirected to a fraudulent webpage designed to deceive them into divulging sensitive information. This includes their internet banking login credentials, credit card details, or even one-time passwords.
It is only after the victims realize that their bank accounts or credit cards have been compromised and unauthorized transactions have taken place that they become aware of the deception. In light of these incidents, the police have urged the public to exercise caution and refrain from clicking on suspicious URL links.
To combat this growing threat, law enforcement authorities have advised individuals to verify the authenticity of any information they receive directly with the e-commerce platform. Furthermore, victims are encouraged to report any fraudulent transactions to their respective banks without delay. Additionally, it is crucial to report any suspicious users or fraudulent activities occurring on online marketplaces to the e-commerce platform itself.
