11-8-2023 (JAKARTA) The European Union (EU) emphasized its robust trade and investment partnership with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), underscoring the solid relationship between the two regions. EU Ambassador to ASEAN, Igor Driesmans, expressed confidence in the strong ties during a press conference.
Driesmans highlighted the substantial trade value in goods between the EU and ASEAN, which amounts to 200 billion euros annually. In comparison to other regions such as Australia and India, this figure signifies a remarkable advantage for the EU. The ambassador expressed his hope for further growth in trade and investment, particularly through the implementation of free trade agreements between the EU and ASEAN member countries.
The EU has also made a significant investment of 10 billion euros, focusing on cooperation in various sectors including air transport, trade, and ASEAN connectivity. Moreover, the EU has prioritized its green agenda in ASEAN, taking proactive steps to address climate change and achieve net zero emissions.
As the EU is responsible for 17 percent of global CO2 emissions, cooperation with ASEAN is vital in tackling climate change. Recent disasters linked to climate change have underscored the urgency of collective action. Driesmans stressed the importance of working together with all countries to address this global challenge, considering the alarming impact it has had on Europe and the world.
The EU’s commitment to strengthening trade and investment relations with ASEAN aligns with its goal of fostering regional cooperation and addressing shared challenges. By deepening collaboration, the EU and ASEAN aim to enhance economic prosperity, promote sustainable development, and combat climate change for the benefit of both regions and the global community.
