21-2-2024 (MANILA) A flight from Boracay, Philippines, to Shanghai experienced a power bank explosion incident, prompting an emergency landing in Hong Kong. The incident occurred on Philippine Royal Airline’s RW602 flight on Monday night (February 19). The in-flight emergency was triggered when a passenger’s power bank exploded, causing the cabin to fill with dense smoke.
The flight, initially en route to Shanghai, executed an emergency landing in Hong Kong. After implementing a series of safety measures, the aircraft resumed its journey to Shanghai. The flight, scheduled to arrive at Shanghai Airport around 9 p.m., eventually landed at 12:14 a.m. on Tuesday, with no reported injuries during the incident.
A passenger shared a video on the social media platform Xiaohongshu, depicting the cabin filled with smoke. The video showed passengers standing in the aisle, some carrying their belongings, assessing the situation.
According to some passengers, the majority on board were Chinese tourists heading to the Philippines. They claimed that the incident occurred when a passenger violated safety rules by using a power bank to charge an iPad, leading to the explosion.
