1-3-2024 (SAN FRANCISCO) Elon Musk has initiated legal action against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, as well as other individuals, claiming that they have violated contractual agreements established when he co-founded the company responsible for developing ChatGPT in 2015. The lawsuit was filed on Thursday (Feb 29) in San Francisco.
According to the lawsuit, Altman and Greg Brockman, OpenAI’s co-founder, initially approached Musk to establish an open-source, non-profit organization dedicated to advancing artificial intelligence technology for the betterment of humanity.
Musk’s legal team argues that OpenAI’s current focus on pursuing profits contradicts the original agreement. However, OpenAI, Microsoft, and Musk have not yet responded to requests for comment from Reuters.
While Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015, he resigned from the company’s board in 2018. In addition to his involvement with OpenAI, Musk is also the CEO of Tesla, the renowned electric vehicle manufacturer, and made headlines in October 2022 when he acquired Twitter for a staggering US$44 billion.
Upon its release in November 2022, ChatGPT, OpenAI’s chatbot, quickly became the world’s fastest-growing software application. Its success prompted other tech giants such as Microsoft and Alphabet, as well as numerous startups, to launch their own chatbot offerings, capitalizing on the hype and securing significant funding.
