19-1-2024 (JAKARTA) A 5.4-magnitude earthquake jolted Central Sulawesi province in central Indonesia early on Friday morning, as reported by the country’s Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG).
According to the agency, the earthquake occurred at 00:36 a.m. Jakarta time on Friday (1736 GMT on Thursday), with the epicenter situated 9 km southwest of Tojo Una-Una regency. The seismic event reached a depth of 10 km below the earth’s surface.
The quake’s intensity was most strongly felt at III to IV MMI (Modified Mercalli Intensity) in the regencies of Tojo Una-Una and Poso, indicating a notable impact in those areas, the agency added.
Despite the substantial seismic activity, no tsunami warning was issued, as the tremors were not anticipated to generate large waves that could pose a threat to coastal areas.
Indonesia, located within the Pacific Ring of Fire, is particularly susceptible to earthquakes due to its position in this earthquake-prone region. The Pacific Ring of Fire is renowned for its heightened seismic and volcanic activities.
