7-6-2023 (AMSTERDAM) The Dutch Data Protection Authority (DPA) has raised concerns regarding the use of personal data by software developers working on artificial intelligence (AI). In a letter addressed to OpenAI, a Microsoft-backed organization, the DPA seeks clarification on the handling of personal information in relation to OpenAI’s widely popular ChatGPT.
As governments, including the European Union, contemplate regulations for AI technology, the DPA highlights the need to address the treatment of personal data in the context of “generative” AI.
“The DPA is concerned about how organizations that make use of so-called ‘generative’ artificial intelligence treat personal information,” stated the agency.
Taking proactive measures, the DPA plans to initiate various actions in the future. As an initial step, they have reached out to OpenAI to gain insights into the data collection methods employed in the development of ChatGPT and the data storage practices, particularly in relation to user queries.
With mounting concerns over the potential misuse of AI technology, there is growing apprehension that malicious actors and governments could exploit it to propagate disinformation on an unprecedented scale.
