28-6-2024 (HANOI) In a tragic incident that unfolded on the streets of Vung Tau City on Thursday night, a female driver operating under the influence of alcohol crashed into multiple vehicles at a red light, resulting in the deaths of a mother and her child.
The horrifying series of events began around 9:15 p.m. when 37-year-old Tran Thi Thu Thanh, driving a four-seater car on Nguyen Van Troi Street, collided with a garbage cart being pushed by sanitary worker Nguyen Thi Phuong, 44, who was traveling in the same direction.
Failing to stop, Thanh’s car then reached the intersection with Hung Vuong Street, striking motorcyclist Bui Xuan Thao, 44, who was carrying a 13-year-old boy on the back seat.
The car continued its destructive path, speeding towards the red-light area at the intersection of Nguyen Van Troi – Ba Trieu – Le Lai – Le Quy Don, colliding with two other motorcycles traveling in the same direction.
In a chilling turn of events, the car dragged one of the motorcycles under its chassis towards Le Quy Don Street, where it struck another motorcycle carrying Le Thi Nhu Tien, 43, and her mother Phan Thi Su, 73, who were waiting at the red light.
The impact of the collision pushed the motorcycle and the victims onto the sidewalk on Le Quy Don, where the car then hit another motorcycle and a parked car. Tragically, both Su and Tien were pronounced dead at the scene shortly after the crash.
The series of collisions only came to a halt after the car crashed into an electric pole, leaving a trail of destruction spanning nearly 500 meters, according to police reports.
In addition to the two fatalities, five other victims sustained multiple injuries, including broken legs. Four motorcycles and two cars were also damaged in the incident.
In a statement issued on Friday morning, Vung Tau City authorities confirmed that the driver, Thanh, had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.503 mg per liter of breath, well above the legal limit.
