27-1-2025 (KUALA LUMPUR) Selangor authorities have revealed that toxicology tests detected narcotics in the system of 15-year-old Yap Xin Yuan, whose decomposed remains were discovered near Sungai Changgang in Banting last month following her disappearance from a lion dance practice session.
In a press briefing, Selangor Police Chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan emphasised that whilst drugs were present in the victim’s system, investigators cannot yet definitively establish this as the cause of death, pending comprehensive forensic analysis.
“Our investigation remains active as we compile additional evidence to determine the precise circumstances that led to this teenager’s tragic demise,” Khan told reporters. He noted that some cases require extended investigation periods that exceed standard remand durations.
The case has gripped the nation since December 22, when Yap vanished after attending lion dance training at a basketball court in Batu 11, Cheras. Her disappearance sparked an extensive search operation before the grim discovery of her body.
Addressing the ongoing investigation, Khan explained the procedural constraints facing investigators. “The maximum detention period for any offence is 14 days. When crucial evidence requires more time to gather, we cannot hold suspects beyond this statutory limit,” he said.
Investigators are currently awaiting two critical reports – the complete forensic analysis and the detailed post-mortem findings. Once obtained, these documents will be forwarded to the Deputy Public Prosecutor to determine potential charges.
The investigation, being conducted under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, is pursuing multiple angles, including possible misunderstandings and drug overdose as contributing factors to the teenager’s death.
Khan stressed that the completion of the investigation would not be rushed, despite public interest in the case. “The presence of a suspect does not guarantee immediate charges. We must ensure our evidence meets the rigorous standards required for prosecution,” he added.
