2-12-2023 (SINGAPORE) Funeral ceremonies, typically solemn affairs meant for remembrance and solace, took an unexpected turn in Jurong East when a confrontation unfolded around the coffin during its procession.
The disturbance, involving a considerable number of individuals, revolved around a flower garland thrown onto the coffin, leading to a tussle as it was promptly removed. The conflicting parties were identified as the family of the deceased and a group associated with her boyfriend.
In a video circulating on Facebook via STOMP, the footage captures a group approaching the coffin from behind as it is being carried. Carrying a blue garland, they toss it onto the coffin, initiating a swift reaction as others swiftly retrieve it. The altercation intensifies with pushing, shoving, and verbal exchanges, reaching a point where the coffin teeters precariously.
While numerous individuals are involved, the core dispute emerges between two distinct groups. Allegedly, the disruption stems from the deceased’s boyfriend and his associates, who clashed with the family during the funeral proceedings.
The uncle of the deceased, speaking to Shin Min Daily News, revealed that his niece had tragically taken her own life due to emotional struggles. Consequently, the family had decided to exclude the boyfriend from bidding her farewell or offering flowers.
Despite their wishes, the boyfriend and his friends reportedly disrupted the funeral, engaging in disruptive behaviour such as shouting, pushing, and targeting elderly attendees. The uncle claimed they attempted to obstruct the hearse and even push the coffin out of it.
Frustrated by the escalating situation, the family reached out to the police, who promptly intervened and awaited the procession at Mandai Crematorium.
According to STOMP, the incident unfolded on Nov 19 at Block 247 Jurong East Street 24. The deceased’s father, in a police report, asserted that the boyfriend arrived with a group exceeding 20 people. As the coffin was being moved from the flat to the hearse, the group allegedly attempted to throw flowers onto the coffin, resulting in physical altercations. Some individuals reportedly fell during the scuffle.
Additionally, the disruptive group purportedly tried to pull down the coffin and obstruct the hearse. Their departure coincided with the police’s arrival, and they did not follow the procession to the crematorium.
