17-8-2023 (SOFIA) In a shocking incident, the dismembered body of Christian Peev, a 41-year-old cryptocurrency mogul holding both U.S. and Bulgarian citizenship, was reportedly discovered in Bulgaria’s capital, Sofia.
Plumbers, responding to a call to clear a blocked drain, stumbled upon the gruesome discovery when they found Peev’s remains stuffed in a toilet, as per a report by British newspaper The Mirror.
Peev had attained his education from an American university and had amassed a significant fortune through cryptocurrency investments. Investigative authorities suspect that Peev was murdered between August 8 and August 9. The alleged perpetrator, Vesco Valchinov, had reportedly known Peev for around six years prior to the incident.
Details surrounding the murder are harrowing. Local media sources have disclosed that Valchinov, the accused killer, had allegedly used a dumbbell to murder Peev before dismembering the body in the bathroom and discarding some parts down the toilet.
The investigation was initiated after Peev’s brother reported him missing on August 10. The examination of Peev’s two phones revealed the crime scene. On the day of his disappearance, Peev had been in contact with Valchinov. Security camera footage confirmed that the two had entered Valchinov’s apartment block on August 8, and the following day, Valchinov left the building alone.

Another individual, Konstantin Subotinov, was arrested in connection with the case. Subotinov admitted to assisting the alleged killer in concealing other portions of Peev’s body. These parts were transported by car to the Sofia district of Vitosha, where Valchinov was eventually apprehended.
Bulgarian media reported that Peev had been aiding Valchinov with cryptocurrency investments, potentially suggesting a financial motive behind the crime.
This unfortunate incident is not the first of its kind. Peev’s case bears resemblance to the death of Fernando Pérez Algaba, another cryptocurrency enthusiast, whose dismembered body parts were discovered in a red suitcase in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in July. Algaba’s extravagant lifestyle, funded by his cryptocurrency investments, was well-known through his Instagram account. An autopsy revealed that Algaba had been shot three times before being dismembered.
The cryptocurrency industry has witnessed other high-profile deaths in recent times. In November 2022, the deaths of Tiantian Kullander, Vyacheslav Taran, and Nikolai Mushegian, prominent figures in the cryptocurrency world, fueled conspiracy theories speculating sinister connections between their passings and those of other billionaires and millionaires within the industry.
