27-8-2023 (MANILA) The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has pledged its unwavering support to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in its efforts to enhance its capabilities, particularly in patrolling the disputed West Philippine Sea. DFA Secretary Enrique Manalo expressed his admiration for the PCG’s dedication to defending the country and upholding its rights in the region during a recent meeting held aboard the BRP Melchora Aquino at Manila’s South Harbor on August 25.
Addressing Commandant Admiral Artemio Abu and his team, Secretary Manalo emphasized the crucial role played by the PCG as the “eyes and ears” of the Philippines, especially in the West Philippine Sea. He specifically mentioned the incident on August 5, when Chinese coast guard ships obstructed and sprayed water cannons at PCG and military vessels transporting supplies to personnel stationed on the BRP Sierra Madre. Secretary Manalo stressed the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing such challenges, highlighting that cooperation was essential for the successful execution of their shared responsibilities.
“I want to assure you that the DFA stands fully behind you,” Secretary Manalo affirmed. “We will continue to draw inspiration from your work and provide unwavering support.” He also emphasized the need for close cooperation between the DFA and the PCG, ensuring that their actions align with the nation’s pursuit of sovereign rights, independence, and an independent foreign policy.
Furthermore, Secretary Manalo assured the PCG of the DFA’s commitment to facilitate the acquisition of additional vessels, state-of-the-art facilities, and advanced equipment to further enhance the PCG’s performance in fulfilling its mandated functions.
