11-9-2024 (MELBOURNE) Tensions erupted on the streets of Melbourne on Wednesday as anti-war demonstrators and law enforcement officers engaged in a fierce confrontation outside the Land Forces International Land Defence Exposition. The biennial event, touted as Australia’s largest defence expo, became the epicentre of a tumultuous protest that saw police deploy tear gas, rubber bullets, and pepper spray to control the swelling crowd.
Hundreds of impassioned protesters converged on the exhibition venue, their voices amplified by loudspeakers chanting pro-Palestine slogans. The sea of demonstrators, many waving Palestinian flags, created a vivid spectacle of dissent against the backdrop of the defence industry showcase.
The scale of the protest prompted what local media are calling the most significant police operation in Melbourne since the World Economic Forum in 2000. Riot squad officers and mounted police struggled to contain the surging crowd within designated barricades, leading to several intense clashes.

As the situation escalated, some protesters resorted to pushing dumpsters towards police lines, while others directed their ire at conference delegates. The chaos spilled onto Melbourne’s major thoroughfares, with authorities closing several key roads and urging motorists to avoid the city centre. In one dramatic incident, a protester was seen scaling a truck halted at traffic lights, further intensifying the already volatile atmosphere.
The defence expo, which is set to run until Friday, has drawn participation from approximately 1,000 firms representing 31 countries. This concentration of defence industry players has evidently struck a nerve with anti-war activists, culminating in today’s explosive confrontation.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, responding to the unfolding events, affirmed the right to protest while condemning violent methods. “Peaceful demonstration is a cornerstone of our democracy,” Albanese stated in an interview with Channel Seven. “However, assaulting police officers is not a legitimate form of protest against defence equipment. Our law enforcement personnel deserve respect as they carry out their duties.”
