11-2-2024 (MANILA) The death toll from a devastating landslide in the southern Philippines has climbed to 35, officials confirmed on Sunday (Feb 11), as rescue operations persist despite fading hopes of finding more survivors.
The landslide occurred late Tuesday outside a gold mine in Maco town, located in the province of Davao de Oro. It buried homes and vehicles transporting employees to the site operated by Apex Mining.
Edward Macapili, an official from Davao de Oro province, reported the increase in fatalities from the initial count of 28. Presently, 77 individuals are still missing, and 32 have sustained injuries.
Despite the efforts of over 300 rescue personnel, operations have been severely challenged by incessant rainfall, thick mud, and the looming threat of additional landslides. Macapili stated that rescue efforts resumed on Sunday morning amidst these difficult conditions.
When asked about the possibility of finding survivors, Macapili expressed that it was becoming increasingly unlikely, although the search would persist.
“The rescue team is exerting maximum effort, despite facing significant challenges,” Macapili remarked.
Davao de Oro has experienced relentless heavy rains in recent weeks, leading to widespread flooding and landslides.
