15-6-2024 (PHNOM PENH) A tragic road accident in southeast Cambodia’s Tboung Khmum province has claimed the lives of seven local residents and left one person critically injured. The fatal collision, which occurred in the early hours of Friday (June 14), has once again shed light on the persistent issue of road safety in the Southeast Asian nation.
According to Major Mao Nary, the police chief of Roka Po Pram commune, the devastating crash took place at approximately 4:30 a.m. local time on National Road 71C. A speeding cargo truck collided head-on with another truck traveling in the opposite direction, resulting in a catastrophic impact.
“Seven men were killed, and another one was seriously wounded in the crash,” Major Nary told Xinhua over the telephone, underscoring the severity of the incident.
Rescue operations were swiftly carried out, with emergency services rushing to the scene to provide assistance to the victims and clear the wreckage. However, despite their efforts, the lives of seven individuals could not be saved, highlighting the often-tragic consequences of road accidents.
The incident has once again cast a spotlight on the alarming rate of road fatalities in Cambodia. According to a report by the National Police, a staggering 1,590 people lost their lives, and 4,515 others sustained injuries in road crashes across the kingdom throughout the entirety of 2023.
