26-7-2023 (MANILA) A violent gang clash erupted on Tuesday night at the New Bilibid prison in the Philippine capital, resulting in one inmate’s death and nine others being injured, according to a prison official’s statement on Wednesday.
Angelina Bautista, the deputy director general for operations of the Bureau of Corrections, reported that the prisoners involved in the conflict had seemingly resolved the dispute when suddenly, one inmate produced a handgun and began firing indiscriminately, hitting several inmates.
Amid the chaos, one inmate suffered fatal stab wounds from an ice pick. Additionally, correctional officers discovered a 45-caliber handgun loaded with 12 rounds of ammunition at the scene.
In response to the incident, prison authorities suspended visiting hours at the facility as an investigation into the violent clash was initiated.
