29-9-2024 (HANOI) A devastating fire at a plastic recycling facility in Hanoi’s Hoai Duc district has resulted in one fatality, local authorities reported on the afternoon of 28 September. The incident, which occurred in the morning hours, quickly escalated into a complex emergency situation, challenging first responders and threatening nearby properties.
The blaze erupted at a single-storey structure in Duong Lieu commune, encompassing approximately 50 square metres of floor space. The building, constructed with a steel frame and corrugated iron roofing, housed highly flammable materials typical of plastic recycling operations. Police officials described the fire as particularly challenging due to the presence of toxic smoke and gases, as well as the potential for rapid spread to adjacent areas.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing thick plumes of black smoke rising hundreds of metres into the air, visible from several kilometres away. The alarming sight prompted a swift and substantial response from emergency services.
Upon receiving alerts, the Hanoi City Police mobilised significant resources, dispatching six fire engines and 40 officers to the scene. These units were tasked with both firefighting operations and search and rescue efforts. In a display of community cooperation, the Hoai Duc District Police called upon officers from neighbouring communes to assist, while also enlisting support from the District Military Command and local residents.
Despite the concerted efforts of the emergency responders, it took nearly two hours to fully extinguish the blaze. The fire’s aftermath revealed a grim toll: one person lost their life in the incident. Material damages were extensive, with the plastic recycling factory suffering destruction across approximately 500 square metres. Additionally, a nearby laundry facility saw partial damage over an area of about 100 square metres.
In the wake of this tragic event, Hoai Duc District Police have initiated a thorough investigation in collaboration with specialist units. Their primary objectives are to determine the precise cause of the fire and to address any potential regulatory violations that may have contributed to the incident.
This catastrophe underscores the inherent risks associated with industrial recycling processes, particularly those involving highly combustible materials. It also highlights the critical importance of stringent safety measures and regular inspections in such facilities to prevent future tragedies.
