28-6-2023 (HOLLYWOOD) Acclaimed American actor David Corenswet has been confirmed as the latest performer to don Superman’s iconic red cape, according to director James Gunn. Gunn announced on Tuesday that Corenswet, renowned for his leading role in the popular Netflix series “Hollywood,” will portray the beloved superhero in the upcoming film “Superman: Legacy,” set to release in 2025 by Warner Bros.
The news of Corenswet’s casting, along with the revelation that Rachel Brosnahan, the Emmy-winning star of the hit comedy “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” will portray Lois Lane, was initially reported by various Hollywood trade publications. Gunn confirmed the casting choices by retweeting an article from The Hollywood Reporter, adding, “Accurate! (They are not only both incredible actors but also wonderful people).”
Superman’s enduring prominence in popular culture makes the role one of the most prestigious and closely watched in the entertainment industry. Previous actors who have donned the cape on the big screen include Christopher Reeve, Brandon Routh, and most recently, Henry Cavill.
Henry Cavill, the British actor known for his portrayal of Superman in films like 2013’s “Man Of Steel,” briefly reprised the role for a post-credits scene in last year’s “Black Adam.” However, with Warner undergoing new leadership after merging with Discovery, director James Gunn, renowned for his work on “Guardians Of The Galaxy,” was entrusted with overseeing all DC Comics superhero movies alongside Aquaman producer Peter Safran.
Gunn and Safran were tasked with reinvigorating the DC film franchise, which has struggled at the box office compared to the highly successful Marvel superhero films. Recent disappointments such as “The Flash” had prompted the need for a fresh direction for the franchise. As part of this new vision, the role of Superman has undergone recasting.
David Corenswet has amassed an impressive resume, including notable performances in Netflix’s “The Politician,” HBO’s drama series “We Own This City,” and the horror film “Pearl.” With his talent and experience, he is poised to bring a fresh perspective to the iconic character of Superman.
