9-8-2023 (BANGKOK) Charoen Pokphand Foods Plc (CP Foods), a leading agribusiness company, has unveiled a groundbreaking achievement by introducing Asia’s inaugural carbon-neutral cage-free egg, setting a new standard for sustainable and ethical egg production.
This pioneering product has received official certification from the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (TGO), solidifying CP Foods’ commitment to advancing animal-friendly and environmentally-conscious food options.
The head of CP Foods’ egg business, Somkid Wannalukkhee, underlined the company’s unwavering dedication to crafting low-carbon solutions that effectively mitigate environmental impacts throughout their value chain. Among the notable initiatives are the installation of automated egg conveyors, reducing food loss in line with UN Food and Agriculture Organization guidelines, optimizing eggshell utilization, and the integration of renewable energy sources such as solar panels and biogas systems in layer farms and egg production procedures.
These multifaceted endeavors culminated in a significant achievement last year, with 23 varieties of fresh eggs and cage-free eggs receiving the prestigious Carbon Footprint Reduction Label or Global Warming Reduction Label.
An outstanding highlight among CP Foods’ product offerings is the U Farm brand of cage-free eggs, which now proudly stands as Asia’s first “carbon-neutral cage-free egg.”
Mr. Somkid expressed the broader implications of this milestone, stating, “This initiative is yet another step by the company to increase the availability of low-carbon food products, supporting conscious consumers who prioritise animal welfare and environmentally friendly sourcing.”
Beyond its environmental contributions, the carbon-neutral cage-free eggs signify a leap in nutritional quality, providing consumers with a responsible and ethical choice that aligns with their values.
U Farm, the brand that achieved the carbon-neutral distinction, secured the Global Warming Reduction label from TGO in the previous year. In a continued effort to offset any residual emissions, CP Foods has taken additional measures this year, including carbon credit purchases.
Mr. Somkid emphasized the remarkable achievement of CP Foods’ certified products in significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions, surpassing the industry average by an impressive 30%. In the past year alone, CP Foods’ range of 23 global warming reduction egg products collectively curtailed an estimated 617,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalence.
Guaranteeing the highest standards, CP Foods ensures that their cage-free eggs are sourced from specialized breeding layer hens. These hens are raised in an enclosed cage-free layer system, adhering to internationally recognized standards and officially certified by Thailand’s Department of Livestock Development.
