21-6-2024 (JAKARTA) Bank Indonesia (BI) Deputy Governor Doni Primanto Joewono has announced that the circulation of counterfeit money in Indonesia is steadily declining.
“In 2019, there were 9 PPM (Parts Per Million). In one million pieces, there were 9 counterfeit notes in 2019, then in 2020-2023 it dropped to 5 pieces in one million pieces, and actually in 2024, there are only 2 pieces in one million pieces,” Doni said on Thursday.
During the Announcement of the Results of the BI Board of Governors Meeting in June 2024, he attributed the decline in the circulation of counterfeit money in the country to the cooperation between all parties to prevent counterfeit money from circulating.
“Once again, appreciation to all parties, and of course, we will provide money with enough fractions and denominations. We also do it in remote areas so that people are not deceived by counterfeit money,” he said.
Additionally, Doni expressed BI’s appreciation for the Indonesian National Police (Polri)’s efforts in uncovering counterfeit money operations.
The Metro Jaya Police recently revealed that counterfeit money worth Rp22 billion, printed in an accounting office in the Srengseng area of Kembangan, West Jakarta, had not yet been circulated to the public.
“We at Bank Indonesia certainly appreciate every disclosure of counterfeit money carried out by the Police as a form of law enforcement for criminal acts against the rupiah, especially we appreciate the Metro Jaya Police,” said Doni.
He explained that Indonesia has a Counterfeit Rupiah Eradication Coordinating Agency (Botasupal), a non-structural institution under the President’s authority, responsible for coordinating the eradication of counterfeit rupiah.
Botasupal’s elements include the National Intelligence Agency, the Indonesian National Police, the Attorney General’s Office, the Ministry of Finance, and Bank Indonesia.
Within BI, there is the Bank Indonesia Counterfeit Analysis Center (BI-CAC) that analyzes counterfeit rupiah notes.
“Once counterfeit notes are found, they will be handed over to BI for examination at BI-CAC,” Doni said.
