28-9-2023 (BANGKOK) A controversial TikTok video featuring two young foreign women, claiming to be teaching children in an unspecified “random town in Thailand” without the necessary qualifications, has ignited a storm of criticism after going viral on social media.
The video showcases two foreign women, appearing to be around 18 years old, who jovially point to captions that read: “You guys can’t just travel forever, when are you gonna go uni or get a job? Us in a random town in Thailand teaching kids with no qualifications.”
The video’s posting led to an immediate outcry, with many netizens demanding that the Department of Labour and the Education Ministry address concerns about these women’s work permits. Questions also arose regarding the compensation these foreign teachers receive and how their salaries compare to those of their local counterparts.
In response to these inquiries, one of the “unqualified” teachers revealed that she receives reimbursement for her flight to London, amounting to approximately 45,000 baht, and is provided with daily meals and accommodation.
