10-9-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) Raja Petra Kamarudin, the influential and often contentious Malaysian blogger known widely as RPK, has passed away in Manchester, United Kingdom. He was 74 years old.
The news of his death was confirmed by his brother, Raja Idris, “It is with profound sorrow that I inform you of the passing of my beloved brother, Raja Petra Kamarudin,” Raja Idris stated. “He left us at 11:26 pm UK time on Monday, 9 September, in Manchester.”
Born on 27 September 1950, Raja Petra became a prominent figure in Malaysia’s political landscape through his website, Malaysia Today. The platform served as a hub for political commentary and articles that often stirred controversy and sparked intense debates within Malaysian society.
RPK’s journey was marked by both acclaim and adversity. His outspoken nature and willingness to tackle sensitive political issues head-on led to his detention under the Internal Security Act on two separate occasions – first in 2001 and again in 2008.
