23-9-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) A 51-year-old contractor appeared before the Magistrate’s Court in Alor Setar on Monday, 23 September, to face charges for the alleged murder of former Moto3 and Cub Prix national racer, Elly Idzlianizar Ilias.
Ibrahim Johan stands accused of taking the life of 40-year-old Elly Idzlianizar at an intersection in Taman Behor Gonchar Jaya. The alleged incident occurred between 10:30 pm on 10 September and 12:01 am on 11 September, sending shockwaves through the local racing fraternity.
The gravity of the charge was evident as it was read out before Magistrate Ana Rozana Mohd Nor. Under Section 302 of the Penal Code, if convicted, Ibrahim faces either capital punishment or a lengthy prison term ranging from 30 to 40 years. Should the death penalty not be imposed, the accused would also face a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane.
While Ibrahim acknowledged the charge with a nod, no plea was recorded as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court. Given the severity of the accusation, the court denied bail and set 30 December as the date for the next mention, allowing time for the submission of pertinent documents.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Nabilah Ahmad Po’ad represented the prosecution, while lawyer Tan Yen Sing appeared for the defence.
The tragic demise of Elly Idzlianizar has cast a long shadow over Malaysia’s motorsport scene. The former racer had carved out a notable career, making his mark at the 2009 Malaysian Grand Prix and clinching victories with renowned manufacturers including Yamaha, Honda, and Suzuki.
