19-2-2024 (BEIJING) Employees at Kuangshan Crane Company in Henan, China, experienced an unconventional approach to year-end bonuses at the company’s recent party on Feb 5. According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), the celebration involved a cash-and-grab game, where staff had the opportunity to “earn” their year-end bonuses by participating in a lively cash-grab activity.
The party, attended by all 5,000 staff members of the crane manufacturing company, featured a 50-metre-long table at its center, laden with piles of cash. Each employee had the chance to grab as many 100-yuan banknotes as possible within a set timeframe, determined by the results of a lottery. The total prize pool for the event reached an impressive 100 million yuan.
Videos shared on Douyin captured the energetic scene, showcasing employees eagerly counting their winnings after the exhilarating cash grab. However, the counting process was not without its challenges – for every banknote inaccurately counted, a deduction of 1,000 yuan was imposed, as reported by Star Video.
One fortunate participant emerged with a substantial haul of 97,800 yuan, describing the event as “awesome.”
This isn’t the first time Kuangshan Crane Company has made headlines for its unique approach to employee incentives. In January of the previous year, the company distributed significant bonuses, with 40 staff members receiving at least one million yuan each. The top-performing sales managers were even awarded five million yuan each. In a video from that event, employees could be seen collecting money from multiple stacks of cash, with the top prize reportedly requiring assistance from multiple individuals due to its weight.
While some netizens applauded the company’s generosity, others questioned the motive behind such extravagant gestures. Some viewed it as a clever publicity stunt, prompting discussions on the appropriateness of the event.
As one user questioned, “Isn’t this too much?” Another expressed concerns about the practicality of the corporate culture, stating, “They bothered to get all the cash from the bank and give them out, but the recipients need to bring the money back to the bank to deposit it. I don’t like such a corporate culture.”
