8-7-2023 (SINGAPORE) Celebrated comedian Kumar, known for his sharp sociopolitical jokes on stage, is now touching the hearts of Singaporeans with a glimpse into his personal life. In an interview with local digital video publisher Our Grandfather Story (OGS) at his modest home, Kumar revealed that he has been a parent figure to a 30-year-old man named Sathin for the past decade.
Despite being a private and reserved person, Kumar shared this lesser-known fact, stating, “People don’t know I’m a parent to a boy who is 30 years old this year.” Sathin, the younger brother of Kumar’s friend, sought refuge at the comedian’s house after a falling out with his father, requesting to stay for a few days. Kumar agreed, feeling a connection to Sathin and recognizing similarities to his own upbringing.
In the interview with OGS, Kumar disclosed that his late father was strict and became an alcoholic after his marriage failed, leading to abusive behavior towards Kumar and his siblings. Reflecting on his own past helplessness, Kumar felt compelled to assist Sathin, and what was initially meant to be a short stay turned into a remarkable 11-year bond.
Unfortunately, the nature of their relationship has been questioned, with accusations suggesting inappropriate behavior. Kumar vehemently refuted these allegations, emphasizing that being gay does not define their parenting dynamic or justify such baseless claims. He expressed disbelief and cut off friends who made these accusations, highlighting the discrimination faced by the LGBTQ+ community.
For Kumar, family has become the most important aspect of his life. Despite initially confessing his aversion to children and a reluctance to become a parent in the OGS video, he expressed surprise at the depth of love he can offer. “I never dreamed of being a parent, so I was very surprised that I can actually give someone so much love, you know?”
