8-6-2023 (SINGAPORE) Comedian Jocelyn Chia has come under fire for making jokes about the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 and mocking Malaysia’s development during a comedy performance in the United States. In response to her offensive remarks, Vanu Gopala Menon, the High Commissioner of Singapore to Malaysia, expressed his shock and issued an apology on behalf of Chia to the people of Malaysia. He also clarified that Jocelyn Chia is no longer a citizen of Singapore.
According to the Singaporean High Commission, previous reports have stated that Jocelyn Chia is now a U.S. citizen. The High Commissioner emphasized that the Singaporean government does not endorse any speech or actions that harm others. He firmly stated that Chia’s offensive remarks do not represent the views of the Singaporean people. Nevertheless, he sincerely apologized for the harm caused to the people of Malaysia by Chia’s remarks.
Menon highlighted the long-standing and intertwined good relations between Malaysia and Singapore, along with their unique history and people-to-people connections. He expressed that Chia’s comments were unhelpful to the bilateral relationship and have damaged the friendship and trust between the two countries.
During her comedy performance in the United States, Jocelyn Chia not only used explicit language on stage, including saying “F-k you, Malaysia,” but also made jokes about the tragic incident of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370’s disappearance. Her remarks have sparked widespread criticism from Malaysian netizens.
