9-6-2023 Jocelyn Chia, a comedian born in Singapore, has recently sparked controversy during her performances in the United States by making jokes about the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 and even belittling Malaysia itself. These remarks have provoked anger among Malaysians, leading to Jocelyn Chia’s name becoming a top trending topic online overnight.
Jocelyn Chia, is 39 years old and currently resides in New York, USA. Prior to becoming a stand-up comedian, she worked as a lawyer.
According to her official website, the introduction states, “Jocelyn Chia is a lawyer turned comedian originally from Singapore.” In a 2019 interview with The New Paper, she revealed that she worked as a lawyer from 2006 to 2009, earning a six-figure salary. However, she decided to give up this high-paying job to pursue comedy.
Multiple Comedy Accolades
After making her debut on the comedy show Gotham Comedy Live, hosted by actor William Shatner, Jocelyn Chia has been performing as a stand-up comedian for the past six years. Prior to attending university in the United States, she studied at St. Nicholas Girls’ School and National Junior College in Singapore. She has achieved several accolades in the comedy industry, including winning the Ladies of Laughter Competition in 2016 and reaching the finals of New York’s Funniest in 2017. In 2018, she received the Rising Star Award-Comedy at the Asian American Television and Film Festival.
Jocelyn Chia has been invited as a guest performer on the Howard Stern Channel radio show and has also been featured on MTV as a guest host. She has performed at the Boston Comedy Festival, Women in Comedy Festival, as well as at New York University and Harvard University.
According to her official website, she is represented by Buchwald in the United States and Warner Music in Asia, making her the first non-music artist to be signed by Warner Music.
It is known that she also works part-time at an improvisational theater and is involved in comedy teaching. She frequently shuttles between the United States and Singapore, sometimes performing up to 15 shows per week.
