27-9-2023 (PHUKET) As China prepares to celebrate two holidays and the visa-free scheme for Chinese travelers continues, Phuket, the renowned resort island, is anticipating an influx of Chinese tourists from the end of this week. The upcoming Chinese New Year, which ushers in the Year of the Dragon in February, further raises expectations for tourist arrivals.
According to Thaneth Tantipiriyakij, President of the Phuket Tourism Association (PTA), the current level of tourism, taking into account both domestic and international visitors, stands at 68% of the pre-pandemic level. In 2019, Phuket welcomed approximately 13 million tourists, including 3.1 million Chinese visitors. However, this year, the number of Chinese tourists has reached around 900,000 thus far.
The recently launched visa-free scheme, effective from Monday for Chinese and Kazakh nationals, is projected to boost the number of Chinese tourists to 1.7 million this year, as stated by Thaneth Tantipiriyakij. The scheme will run until February 29.
Bhummikitti Ruktaengam, Chief Adviser to the PTA, expects that the number of Chinese tourists in Phuket will regain pre-pandemic levels within two years. However, he acknowledges concerns raised by some Chinese tour agencies regarding delays in passport processing or renewal, which could temporarily hinder the flow of tourists as many individuals are eager to travel abroad.
Additionally, China’s economic slowdown is dissuading some from international travel. This factor, along with passport issues, may impact the short-term tourist influx, according to Bhummikitti Ruktaengam.
Siripakorn Cheawsamoot, Deputy Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), expresses confidence that the visa-free scheme will aid in achieving Thailand’s target of hosting 5 million Chinese tourists this year. As of this week, the country has received approximately 2.4 million Chinese visitors.
Kazakhstani tourists are also eligible for the 30-day visa exemption and are considered a high-end market, often traveling as families or couples. On average, they spend around 20 days per trip in Thailand, as noted by Mr. Siripakorn. Lt Chatchawan Sakornsin, Thailand’s ambassador to Kazakhstan, indicates that the scheme has already had a positive impact on tourist numbers from Kazakhstan, with the expectation that the annual figure will rise from 60,000 to 150,000.
Phuket remains a popular destination for Kazakhstani tourists, particularly during the winter season. Lt Chatchawan attributes their attraction to the island’s cultural offerings, such as muay Thai bouts, and its world-class beaches.
