24-6-2023 (BANGKOK) Two Chinese tourists have turned themselves in to the police after photos emerged showing them holding starfish and stepping on coral reefs while taking selfies during a diving trip off Koh Racha Yai. The incident has sparked outrage among marine conservation officials and the local community.
According to the authorities, representatives from the tour company Jinyang Holiday Group accompanied the two customers, identified as Sanyang Qin and Wen Zhang, to meet with investigators at the Chalong station. They were among three Chinese visitors who faced allegations of engaging in destructive behavior during their diving excursion at Ao La off Koh Racha Yai on Thursday.
After photos and videos documenting their activities went viral on social media, marine protection officials promptly filed a police complaint on Friday. The Phuket marine and coastal resource conservation center initiated an investigation to identify the individuals responsible for the actions.

During the questioning, the two tourists admitted to their wrongdoing. They have been charged with violating a ministerial announcement on the protection of marine resources, specifically on the islands of Koh Racha Yai and Koh Racha Noi.
With evidence in hand, the police are preparing to bring the case to court. Meanwhile, efforts are underway to locate the third tourist who is wanted for the same offense.
