21-6-2023 (BEIJING) A 26-year-old Chinese woman, known as “XuYitong” on Twitter, has accused a butler of sexually assaulting her during her stay at the five-star Ritz-Carlton resort in the Maldives, sparking widespread concern. Today (21st), she posted on social media that she had written to Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Speaker of the People’s Majlis Mohamed Nasheed seeking help in the rape case. The Chinese embassy in the Maldives has also submitted relevant materials to the Maldivian side.
I am very concerned after reading @YolyYitong’s letter, and hearing about her case. I call on @PoliceMv to swiftly and thoroughly investigate this incident. pic.twitter.com/A7Tylhyy4A

XuYitong had previously revealed on social media that she was sexually assaulted by a staff member during her stay at the Ritz-Carlton resort in the Maldives, and that the resort management and Maldivian police did not take any action. The Chinese embassy in the Maldives stated to the media yesterday (20th) that it attaches great importance to the case and has immediately raised the matter with the Maldivian side, urging them to investigate the case. Currently, the case is under investigation.
The Ritz-Carlton resort had previously stated that they would “maintain regular communication with the client,” but the woman refuted the hotel’s statement, saying that “the resort has not communicated or apologized to me since the incident.” The incident has raised concerns about the safety of Chinese tourists abroad and the response of local law enforcement agencies.
