8-11-2023 (BEIJING) Securing a job and navigating the job interview process can be a challenging ordeal, and one Chinese man found himself in an unexpected predicament after he was allegedly rejected by every employer he met. Mr. Zhang, who hails from China, applied for positions at more than ten electronics factories in Zhejiang Province, but to his dismay, he faced rejection from all of them. The situation left him struggling to make ends meet, even when it came to affording three meals a day.
The unanimous rejection from potential employers might lead one to wonder if Mr. Zhang had exhibited rude behavior or lacked the qualifications necessary for the positions. However, the actual reason for his rejection, as claimed by the factories’ human resources departments, was quite unique – his face was too square-shaped.
Mr. Zhang’s Quest for Employment
According to Chinese news reports, Mr. Zhang had relocated from Henan to Zhejiang in search of job opportunities. He diligently applied to over ten electronics factories and searched for employment for over a week, expressing his willingness to take on any available position. Yet, after each interview, he faced rejection from the HR departments of these factories, with the sole reason being his appearance.
Reportedly, the employers didn’t deem him too unattractive; instead, they found his facial features resembling a square shape. Mr. Zhang revealed that he had been subjected to nicknames such as “Brother Monkey” and the less imaginative “Square Face.”
In a statement, Mr. Zhang expressed his frustration, saying, “No matter how I look, I’m hardworking, practical, and capable of enduring hardships. Why won’t they hire me?” Indeed, it appears rather unusual for a factory job to hinge on the shape of one’s face.
Square Face’s Struggles
While the employers may have dismissed Mr. Zhang’s application with relative ease, the consequences hit him hard. Left without a job and income, he soon found himself financially strained. On the day of his interview with the news outlet, he couldn’t afford breakfast and had no means of obtaining financial support from his family. Mr. Zhang asserted that he was the sole remaining breadwinner for his family, which motivated his move to Zhejiang.
The lack of income also meant he couldn’t send money to support his family back home, including his children and parents. Encouraged by journalists, Mr. Zhang managed to purchase a few small buns for breakfast but reiterated his determination to continue his job search.
The journalists also pledged to assist him in seeking potential job openings, shedding light on the challenges faced by individuals like Mr. Zhang in their quest for employment.
