27-7-2023 (PHNOM PENH) Siem Reap Angkor International Airport, invested by China’s Yunnan Investment Holdings Ltd., is set to commence operations in October, according to an announcement from the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation on Thursday.
The airport is scheduled to officially open on October 16, 2023. It has already been assigned the official code “SAI” by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the code “VDSA” by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
Prior to its official opening, the Siem Reap Angkor International Airport will conduct a series of non-commercial and non-profitable test flights from October 5 to October 15, as per the statement.
Starting from October 16, all commercial flights for air passengers and cargo, which are currently operated at the existing Siem Reap International Airport, will be completely transferred to the new Siem Reap Angkor International Airport.
Spanning an area of 700 hectares, the airport is located in the Sotr Nikum district, approximately 40 km away from the UNESCO-listed Angkor Archaeological Park and 50 km from Siem Reap provincial town. The project’s construction began in March 2020.
Tekreth Samrach, the secretary of state at the Council of Ministers and chairman of the Steering Committee for the Construction of the Siem Reap Angkor International Airport, expressed that the airport is a 4E-level international facility with a 3,600-meter runway, capable of accommodating various types of aircraft.
“This marks another significant achievement that will not only contribute significantly to Cambodia’s tourism and economy but also directly benefit the local communities in the vicinity,” he stated.
