12-8-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) China’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, has called on the Philippines to promptly collaborate with China in seeking effective solutions to control the situation in the South China Sea. During his visit to Singapore and Malaysia, Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, engaged with dignitaries and conveyed China’s stance on the current South China Sea situation.
Wang emphasized China’s consistent willingness to address differences with the Philippines through bilateral dialogues. He urged the Philippine side to uphold previous agreements and value the mutual trust fostered by the enhancement of bilateral relations.
The Foreign Minister pointed out that, thanks to joint efforts by China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the South China Sea has achieved a significant level of stability over the years. This stability has paved the way for the development of regional countries. Wang highlighted that the disruptive actions of the United States and other entities are aimed at preventing the emergence of lasting stability in the South China Sea.
The recent Ren’ai Jiao issue has been exploited by certain forces to exacerbate tensions between China and the Philippines, potentially disrupting peace and tranquility in the region. Wang underscored that these actions are part of their own geopolitical strategies.
China called upon regional nations to be vigilant against such manipulative actions and take proactive steps to lead in the preservation of peace and stability in the South China Sea. Wang reaffirmed China’s commitment to accelerating consultations with ASEAN nations concerning the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea. The goal is to formulate regional rules that are effective, substantive, and in alignment with international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
Wang expressed confidence in the collective ability and wisdom of China and ASEAN countries to ensure the continued peace and stability of the South China Sea. His visit to Singapore, Malaysia, and Cambodia aims to strengthen diplomatic ties and foster mutual understanding in the Southeast Asian region.
