10-11-2023 (BEIJING) Amid escalating tensions along the China-Myanmar border, the Chinese foreign ministry affirmed its commitment to ensuring security and stability in the region. The statement, issued on Friday (Nov 10), emphasized the need for all parties involved in Myanmar to immediately halt fighting, urging a swift resolution to the ongoing conflict.
The president of military-ruled Myanmar recently expressed concerns about the nation’s unity being at risk due to the ineffective management of violence in its border regions with China. The Myanmar junta is grappling with a significant challenge to its authority, facing a surge in attacks by pro-democracy and ethnic minority insurgents on military bases across various regions.
China, a key regional player, has consistently called for an end to the hostilities and appealed to Myanmar to collaborate in maintaining stability along their common border. The Chinese foreign ministry has underscored the importance of preventing further casualties and safeguarding the well-being of both nations.
Reports have emerged of Chinese citizens being killed in clashes, prompting China to issue advisories to its citizens in Myanmar, advising them to avoid areas with heightened violence.
“China is highly concerned about the conflict in northern Myanmar and urges all parties concerned in Myanmar to immediately cease fire and stop fighting, pay practical attention to China’s security concerns, and work with China to maintain the safety of China-Myanmar co-operation projects and business personnel,” stated foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin during a regular press briefing.
Assistant Chinese Foreign Minister Nong Rong visited Myanmar last week, reinforcing the call for effective measures to enhance security for Chinese institutions and personnel in the region. Of particular significance is the Myanmar-China Gas Pipeline, a crucial component of China’s Belt and Road infrastructure and energy network. The pipeline, which imports fuel in gaseous form from Myanmar, links Ramree Island on the western coast of Myanmar to the Chinese border city Ruili in southwestern Yunnan Province.
