20-2-2025 (BEIJING) China has pledged its full support to Malaysia’s leadership of ASEAN, signalling a deepening of regional cooperation that could reshape economic and security dynamics in the Asia-Pacific region.
The announcement came as Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun responded to recent remarks by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who had highlighted China’s pivotal role as ASEAN’s premier economic partner. The diplomatic exchange underscores the growing importance of Sino-ASEAN relations in an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape.
During his recent address, PM Anwar emphasised the necessity of strengthening bilateral ties, calling for enhanced cooperation to establish robust economic frameworks that would benefit both parties. His comments particularly stressed the urgency of expediting consultations on the South China Sea code of conduct, a matter of pressing regional concern.
Guo highlighted the substantial progress in China-ASEAN relations, pointing to the successful implementation of various initiatives, including the groundbreaking visa-free arrangements with Malaysia and the innovative “Lancang-Mekong visa” scheme. The spokesman noted that trade relations have reached unprecedented levels, with both parties maintaining their positions as each other’s largest trading partners.
“The relationship between China and ASEAN has evolved into a cornerstone of regional stability,” Guo stated, emphasising the recent completion of negotiations for the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area 3.0 upgrade.
Looking ahead, Beijing has outlined an ambitious agenda for cooperation, encompassing digital transformation, green development, and enhanced people-to-people exchanges. The Chinese government has also expressed its commitment to aligning Belt and Road initiatives with ASEAN’s community-building efforts.
Addressing the contentious South China Sea issue, Guo reaffirmed China’s dedication to resolving disputes through bilateral negotiations, citing the success of the “Asian approach” to conflict resolution. He emphasised Beijing’s willingness to work alongside ASEAN nations in implementing the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea.
